Deep Black: Episode One has been in production for what feels like ages.  The game was initially announced like four years ago, and back then it was known under the code name Underwater Wars (or U-Wars).  Since then, though, development notes here and there slipped out, but it almost seemed like the game would never release.  But, last week, it finally showed up, unannounced, as if 505 Games was slipping it under the door just to see who noticed.  After going through it, I can say that it has its problems, but it also has a few intuitive additions that make it stand out from the pack.  Whether that’s enough to make it worth a purchase depends on how much you can stomach the problems.

It’s long been a figure of our imagination to create things to our liking. From stacking countless Lego bricks to make your own personal metropolis, to digital animation used today; or you could choose to avoid the building process entirely and become an el presidente and terrorize the citizens of Tropico Island. The options are up to you for what you want to create.

Inspired by scenes and locations from the Disney Animal Kingdom theme park, Disney Animal Kingdom Explorers was created by Playdom in partnership with the park’s scientists to ensure environmentally correct game play. Players will have the opportunity to become part of the Global Wildlife Research team, learn about rare and endangered species and build their own virtual preserves to house and protect hundreds of animals and plants from around the globe.  Players are even encouraged to be conscious of the needs of animals and their habitats - placing animals who cohabitate well next to each other will earn the player extra points.

One of the most talked-about presentations at the Game Developers Conference (GDC 2012) in San Francisco was David Cage’s KARA. The video, which can be seen below, employs new performance capture technology that Quantic Dream is using for its next game.

Dragon’s Lair is one of those games that could be considered an immortal classic.  It got its start way back in 1983, when laser disc technology was king (we’re talking the big flipper discs, not the Blu-Rays as you know them now) and Don Bluth’s animation shined down on arcades, ushering in an interesting new technology that took the gaming scene by storm.  Now, almost 30 years later, the game lives on through Digital Leisure’s re-releases, and the company has confirmed that it’s now coming to Xbox Live Arcade – with a twist.

Jennifer Hale is a long time voice actress, who has appeared on more mediums than you probably thought. From voicing big roles like Commander Shepard in the “Mass Effect” series to voicing Naomi Hunter in the “Metal Gear” Solid franchise. Her voice has made multiple jumps to TV and movies playing such roles like Disney’s "Cinderella" and Cartoon Network's "Powerpuff Girls". I recently got the chance to ask her a few questions about her time with the “Mass Effect” series and what the future lies ahead for voice acting.

The World Gaming Executives Gamevoices network has offered an unnamed British game development company access to their impressive roster free of charge in the hope that the studio can secure the services of up to five or six game voicing talents. The partnership could be first in a series of projects which sees games studios and game voice actors enjoying a closer relationship. The traditional model sees studios approaching Voice Talent agencies and paying a fee to a middle-man in order to secure the chosen talent, however Gamevoices director John Armstrong believes that if the forthcoming project is a success then it could revolutionize the video game and animation voice industry.

When Ubisoft released Rayman Origins for consoles last year, it brought back one of its longest running franchises in a fresh new mold, one that all gamers could appreciate, from its classic platforming set-up to its gorgeous presentation, which makes it resemble a Saturday morning cartoon brought to life.  Somehow, Ubisoft has managed to cram almost every bit of goodness from the original game into on-the-go play for the PlayStation Vita – and that’s the primary reason why it’s a must-own.

Someone tell me -- why is Virtua Tennis so addictive?  Is it the simplistic gameplay that actually makes tennis fun instead of a chore?  (You guys at Top Spin listening?)  Is it the beautiful visuals?  Maybe it's the mini-games where you get to sink plastic pirate ships with tennis balls?  Or maybe it's a combination of all these things.  Sega easily realizes this, which explains why they're bringing the series to the portable front with the release of Virtua Tennis 4: World Tour on PlayStation Vita later this month.  Just when we were starting to get productive in the office again...

Know what pains me in this industry?  When a truly magnificent game goes unnoticed due to a lack of an ad campaign or a "push", if you will.  That's how I feel about Rayman Origins, which I consider one of the best games of 2011.  Unfortunately, it's barely cleared 50,000 units sold, showing signs that the project is a failure.  No, it's not.  It's a tremendously fun game that shouldn't be missed by anyone -- even if you're not crazy about platformers.  Thankfully, Ubi appears to be giving it another shot, this time on the PlayStation Vita, just in time for its launch.

There's no question that a number of developers are making Kinect games that appeal to gamers of all ages, particularly sports titles and cute little games that parents can play along with their kids.  Well, mark up a huge win for Microsoft, as the company has just announced that it's teaming up with Disney and Pixar to release Kinect Rush for the device early next year.

The Nintendo Video service already delivers fun, entertaining 3D videos, and now that content will be enhanced with additional videos from DreamWorks Animation SKG, 3net and Blue Man Group. “Metroidvania” games are hard to come by these days. However, fans of this exploration based adventure genre do occasionally have something to celebrate. Shadow Complex found its way onto 2009’s Summer of Arcade line-up and stretched the boundaries of what people thought XBLA games could be. While Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet may not be as large in scope, it no doubt makes up for this with a fantastic visual style and a unique puzzle-based implementation of the Metroidvania formula.

To many, the idea of updating a Wii classic to the PS3 complete with spruced up graphics and Move support should seem like heaven; I mean to date the Move still lacks in number truly innovative titles and No More Heroes from the Wii stables is perhaps the most ‘adult’ of all its titles, complete with blood, violence, gore and not to mention intermittent sexuality and Manga niceties; you can see the appeal.

Pixar Animation remains the leader of the pack when it comes to computer-animated blockbusters. The studio earned its 12th consecutive box office debut – winning the top spot for every one of its movies. John Lasseter’s Cars 2 drove over $110.9 million at the global box office, despite bad reviews. The movie finished with $68 million in the U.S. Lasster talks about the 3D sequel in this exclusive video interview below.

John Lasseter actually got the idea for the spy theme used extensively in the new Disney Interactive Studios and Avalanche Software Cars 2 video game back with the original film. He had to cut a scene at a drive-in featuring a car spy movie, but he kept that idea in the back of his head and incorporated it into the new movie. Then the game creatives took the concept of CHROME and designed an entire stand-alone video game around it.
