Funtactix, a worldwide developer and publisher of social games based on movies, has been working closely with Lionsgate to deliver The Hunger Games Adventures to fans of the blockbuster film franchise. The game developer worked closely with author Suzanne Collins on the new casual game, which features the same game engine technology as Mission: Impossible The Game and Rango: The WORLD. With the first movie continuing to break box office records with $61.1 million in its second weekend and $364.9 million overall, this new game will serve to bridge the gap between movies. Three more films are planned.

Publisher Little Orbit is bringing bestselling author Brandon Sanderson’s epic fantasy series Mistborn to the gaming world in 2013 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC and Mac. The upcoming role-playing game (RPG) will feature an original storyline created by Sanderson, set several hundreds of years before the first Mistborn novel, and will focus on a unique combat system that puts Allomancy into the hands of gamers. Players will suit up as Fendin “Fiddle” Fathvell, an arrogant young nobleman who must quickly master his newfound Allomantic abilities before forces at work can destroy his entire family. Sanderson, who penned the Infinity Blade novel and is working with Epic Games on that franchise, discusses his gaming background in this exclusive video interview below.

Del Rey, an imprint of the Random House Publishing Group, is publishing the second novel based on the Hitman video game series from Io Interactive. Hitman: Damnation will be written by author Raymond Benson and will release in North America in summer 2012 before launching internationally. Square Enix’ IO Interactive is developing Hitman: Absolution for release this year, which can be seen in the video below.

Tor Books has released Halo: Primordium, the second novel in acclaimed science fiction author Greg Bear’s Forerunner Saga, a prequel series to the hugely successful Halo video game franchise for the Xbox 360.  An unabridged audio book edition will publish simultaneously with the novel.

Watching television shows in 3D has become a regular activity for the majority of 3DTV owners, according to the latest research from the Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices service. According to the report, “3DTVs: Buying Intentions and Early Adopter Feedback,” two-thirds of 3DTV owners across the US and Europe are watching at least one show in 3D on a weekly basis. Forty-one percent of 3DTV owners claim to be watching shows in 3D at least once a day or several times a day.

Electronic Arts is further expanding the universe of one of the big games of 2011, Battlefield 3, the latest shooter from DICE. Battlefield 3: The Russian novel is written by the highly decorated ex-SAS operator and best-selling author of Bravo Two Zero, Andy McNab, with co-author Peter Grimsdale. The book tells the back-story of RU Special Forces operator Dima, one of the hero soldiers featured in the Battlefield 3 single-player campaign narrative. HBO's Emmy nominated series, Game of Thrones, stole the show Thursday during Comic Con International 2011 in San Diego. The hit new show filled Ballroom 20 to the brim, with fans waiting a minimum of 4 1/2 hours to get in. Many of the main cast and producers were in attendance, drawing the crowds; but the real treat was the moderator - none other than author of the books the show is based on: George RR Martin himelf.

The San Diego Convention Center will be overloaded with massively multiplayer online (MMO) games this year as game publishers tease new games like BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic and Gazillion’s Marvel Universe. Deep Silver will host a panel at Comic-Con 2011 that promises to blend the pop culture fascination with zombies with realities of medical science titled, “The Science of Zombies.” The panel will take place in room 8 of the San Diego Convention Center on July 22 at 7:30 p.m. and will explore  society’s fascination with the Zombie genre as a whole, and demonstrate how creative talent are harnessing medical science to define and explore horror entertainment in more realistic (and therefore more frightening and engaging) ways.

Since the series's inception in the arcades, Ace Combat has been the premier aerial combat game for the last 19 years, although it used to be called Air Combat back in those days. From popping quarters into arcade machines to making its way onto home consoles, the franchise has seen numerous iterations and received critical acclaim along the way. Although it's been known very well for sending players into the danger zone with some of the most popular jet fighters, Ace Combat looks to change the pace a bit by introducing gamers to Black Hawks and other vehicles in the latest title, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon.

Microsoft, Bungie and Tor Books have enlisted Karen Traviss to write a new trilogy of Halo books that will explore the Halo Universe in the wake of the final events of Halo 3.  Halo novels published by Tor have sold over a million combined copies to date, and the entire Halo catalogue is now available in mass market paperback from Tor.  Along Karen's debut Halo novel, Tor is also publishing the second novel from legendary science fiction author Greg Bear's Halo Forerunner trilogy in 2012.  Halo: Glasslands will be published on October 25, 2011. An unabridged audiobook edition will publish simultaneously with the new novel.

Ubisoft’s relationship with bestselling author Tom Clancy has been very lucrative for the French game publisher. The French game publisher has sold over 63 million Tom Clancy video games since Tom Clancy’s Politika launched in 1997. Video games like Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, Tom Clancy’s EndWar, and Tom Clancy’s Hawx have connected the Clancy brand with a diverse male gaming demographic and helped catapult Ubisoft to a top-tier publisher. Now the publisher is targeting an even broader audience with Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online, the first free-to-play online PC game,which is playable at E3 this week.

In support of the scheduled March 15 release of the highly anticipated video game Homefront, THQ is taking a page from its E3 marketing. At last year’s big video game convention, THQ offered free parking in a Korean-occupied lot across the street from the Staples Center. At GDC 2011, THQ is holding a "Defend Your Homefront" rally on Wednesday March 2 at the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco from noon to 1:30 p.m. to promote one of the big games of 2011.

The rapid rise in popularity of social networking sites as a venue for casual gaming since Zynga released FarmVille in June 2009 will make social gaming a billion-dollar business this year, eMarketer estimates. Nearly 62 million U.S. Internet users, or 27% of the online audience, will play at least one game on a social network monthly this year, up from 53 million in 2010. Their numbers will continue to grow and, along with them, money spent on virtual goods, lead-generation offers and advertising. The recent success of Zynga’s CityVille shows the staying power of social games. And new players like Bigpoint are entering the market space.
