(Reuters) - Will Wright, the designer behind successful video game simulations including "SimCity", "The Sims" and "Spore", is at it again. Only this time, rather than controlling virtual people or creating space creatures, the protagonist of "HiveMind" is the actual player.

The Metal Gear series has risen over time to be one of the most prominent video game franchises in history, receiving numerous awards over the years for its cinematic cutscenes and thrilling stealth-action gameplay. It also brought Hideo Kojima into the spotlight, being garnered with tons of praise from gamers and developers alike. However, there is a sore spot in his legacy - the port of Metal Gear on the NES. Maxis has created The Sims and Spore franchises. Now the studio that Will Wright built is entering a new gaming arena. Electronic Arts has released Darkspore on PC, a new gameplay experience that allows players to dive into epic levels of customization, vast hero collection, and intense combat where every choice changes the fight. Available at retail on Windows PC in stores throughout North America and via digital download, Darkspore is an online action RPG in which players battle co-operatively across alien worlds against a deadly foe, as well as test their skills in multiplayer matches against players around the globe. The digital world of TRON is re-born this month in both the TRON: Evolution video game and Walt Disney Pictures’ TRON: Legacy.  Disney Interactive Studios has launched TRON: Evolution in North America. TRON: Evolution takes place between the original TRON film from 1982 and the highly anticipated 3D film TRON: Legacy, which will be released in theaters on December 17, 2010.

Videogame pioneer Will Wright, the creator of SimCity and Spore, will lead “Why Games are (Good) for Learning,” a discussion on how digital games encourage learning, on Wednesday, February 17, 6 – 7 p.m. at the Jack H. Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at New York University. The event, presented by the Games for Learning Institute (G4LI), is free and open to the public, but a ticket is required for entry and seating is limited. The event is co-sponsored by the NYU Game Center, Games for Change, and Microsoft Research.
