The rest of the world is about to get their hands on Epic Games China’s Mercenary Ops. The PC-exclusive, third-person perspective shooter launched in China back in 2010. New publisher Delkans is launching the Unreal Engine 3 game in the U.S. and Europe this summer. Developed in Shanghai by a large number of ex-Ubisoft Tom Clancy developers, the game is being updated for the English-speaking gaming audience. SAN FRANCISCO -- Game Connection announced that independent developer Wolpertinger Games' upcoming title Phobos has won the Game Connection America 2012 Best Selected Project award. Featuring a unique art style and a tense, twisted plot, Phobos provides a highly immersive experience for fans of suspense and horror game genres and is currently in development for major platforms, including Xbox LIVE. Game Connection took place in San Francisco in tandem with the Game Developers Conference (GDC 2012).

SAN FRANCISCO – The Game Developers Conference (GDC 2012) is officially in the record books. The world’s largest and longest-running event serving professionals dedicated to the art and science of making games held to its title of “largest” with a record-breaking 22,500 game industry professionals making the trek to the Moscone Center in San Francisco. That’s a 17% increase in attendance over the previous year’s event.  Following the success of the show, organizers have announced that GDC 2013 will return to the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco from Monday, March 25 to Friday, March 29, 2013, – with a call for lecture submissions to open this summer.

(SCE) today announced that it will release the open beta version of PlayStation Suite SDK to content developers in April 2012 and the official version later this year.  Through the introduction of these SDKs, SCE will offer a more streamlined content development environment for content developers — from large game development companies to small, independent shops — and further expand the world of PlayStation® to open operating system based portable devices.

ZeniMax Media has shipped 10 million units of Bethesda Softworks’ The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game is expected to generate over $650 million at retail by the time all copies have been sold. The PC version of Skyrim in North America outsold all other PC games by a factor of over three to one in November. Large retail reorders across all platforms and record-breaking digital sales reflect the ongoing global demand by consumers excited to explore this extraordinary fantasy epic.

Cologne -- Gamescom keeps getting bigger. Over 275,000 people from around the world trekked to the small German city of Cologne to check out the latest video games up close and personal. Attendance for this year’s Gamescom 2011, which ran August 17-21, was up 21,000 from last year’s convention. There was also a larger media presence, including from the U.S., as more game publishers debuted new titles at the show than ever before.

Cologne -- The 2011 Game Developers Conference Europe (GDC Europe) kicked off Gamescom 2011 with a successful showing and a final attendee count of more than 2,100 game professionals representing 57 countries. Professionals from all areas of the game industry convened throughout the three day conference and engaged on trends and new opportunities among peers. Many speakers stayed in Cologne, Germany to showcase their titles to the media and public at Gamescom, which has also seen record growth.

Sony Computer Entertainment America will have more than just a booth with playable versions of its big PlayStation 3 games from E3 on the show floor of Comic-Con 2011. Sony will also have developers from its key games in attendance throughout the event for panel discussions. When Nintendo launches its first high definition video game console, Wii U, next year, game developers will be able to make stereoscopic 3D games for all three major consoles for the first time. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata confirmed that from a technology standpoint, gamers who connect Wii U to a 3D TV will be able to experience 3D gaming. However, Iwata said 3D gaming is not an area that Nintendo is focusing on in the console space.

Bungie is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Halo with a new venture. The independent game studio has launched the first phase of a new venture, Bungie Aerospace, created to help independent developers create brilliant mobile and social games. Bungie Aerospace will give studios the creative freedom and the resources they need, like access to the Bungie.net platform and an audience with the incredible Bungie community, to launch their entertainment experiences into orbit.

With iPad 2 in record demand, Apple will hold its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) June 6 through June 10 at San Francisco’s Moscone West. At this year’s five-day conference Apple will unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS, including exciting demonstrations of the new kinds of apps that developers can build using Apple’s advanced frameworks and more than 100 technical sessions presented by Apple engineers.

SAN FRANCISCO, California -- PrimeSense, a leader in sensing and recognition technologies, announced the winners of its OpenNI Developer Challenge at the Game Developer Conference  (GDC 2011) taking place at the Moscone Center. SAN FRANCISCO, California --Dessault Systèmes used GDC 2011 to demonstrate that users of 3DVIA Scenes, a free online 3D publishing application, can share their creations in fully immersive stereoscopic 3D. With this update, over 230,000 3DVIA.com content creators can interact inside their applications online or through PC-connected TVs using anaglyph (red/blue), side-by-side, line-by-line or checkerboard-capable 3D glasses.

SAN FRANCISCO, California – While the video game industry gathers in San Francisco for GDC 2011, there are positive steps taking place in Washington, D.C. that could benefit game makers. Representatives Kevin Brady, R-Texas, and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., recently announced the launch of the new Congressional Caucus for Competitiveness in Entertainment Technology (E-Tech Caucus) at a press conference on Capitol Hill. The 39-member caucus will work toward sustaining a robust computer and video game industry by educating Members of Congress and the American people on the industry’s economic, educational and social benefits.
