While E3 is over and Gamescom is right around the corner, retailer GameStop is offering its PowerUp Rewards members a chance to experience a mini-E3 just like store managers. Every year, the game industry brings in celebrities and game developers to showcase the biggest titles for Christmas and beyond to GameStop managers. This year, the managers will get their own show in San Antonio, Texas, but then approximately 5,000 gamers will get the next day to see everything up-close and experience hands-on with the biggest titles of this year. Nintendo Wii U will have a large presence at this EXPO 2012.

Things are looking up for consumer electronics, thanks to the success of new tablets like the Samsung Nexus and new Smart TVs from Vizio and others. The consumer electronics (CE) industry will see stronger than anticipated growth in 2012, according to the semi-annual industry forecast released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). The overall CE industry will grow an estimated 5.9 percent in the U.S. this year, two points higher than previously projected in January.

Cloud gaming company OnLive demonstrated the OnLive Game Service on the next-generation LG Smart TV with Google TV (G2 Series) at E3 2012. Capitalizing on the power of LG’s L9 dual-core processor, the service would make hundreds of top-tier video games from more than 60 publishers playable on-demand, without a console or PC. When the service becomes available, LG G2 TV owners will also enjoy free instant access to exclusive OnLive social features such as worldwide massive spectating, the brand-new OnLive MultiView spectating capability, Brag Clip video recording and Facebook sharing.

Dolby Laboratories and Royal Philips Electronics unveiled Dolby 3D, a 3D HD format and suite of technologies designed to deliver full HD 3D content to 3D-enabled devices, including glasses-free displays. Dolby 3D is being demonstrated at the NAB Show (April 16–19, 2012). The two companies have undertaken the joint project to improve the 3D viewing experience on displays of all sizes, including smartphones, tablets, PCs, and televisions. Dolby 3D is a complete system designed to work throughout the chain to deliver clear glasses-free 3D content that operates over existing distribution systems. This will enable content to be created for Nintendo 3DS and the growing number of 3D smartphones.

Samsung Electronics in the fourth quarter of 2011 solidified its leadership of the U.S. liquid-crystal display (LCD) market, as its share of unit shipments reached a record high, according to the IHS iSuppli Television Systems Service at information and analytics provider IHS. During the final three months of 2011, Samsung accounted for nearly one-quarter of U.S. LCD TV shipments, at 23.6 percent. This represented the largest share of the market ever posted by Samsung on a quarterly basis, and allowed the South Korean electronics giant to pad its lead over No.2 brand VIZIO Inc. of Irvine, Calif.

In what appears to be a decisive turning point, U.S. flat-panel TV shipments are projected to dip for the first time on an annual basis this year, ending an unbroken string of growth since the market began. Shipments in 2012 of flat-panel TVs into the American market are forecast to decline to 37.1 million units, down 5 percent from 39.1 million units in 2011, according to an IHS iSuppli U.S. TV Market Tracker report from information and analytics provider IHS. Only last year, shipments had inched up 1 percent from 38.6 million units in 2010. Some consumer electronics companies continue to do well, like Vizio, which can be seen in the video below showcasing new big screen TVs.

National health care company Humana has extended its partnership with video game leader Ubisoft by offering rewards for healthy gaming. Through its wellness and loyalty solution, HumanaVitality, members are now able to seamlessly earn Vitality Points™ for exercising using Ubisoft’s fitness games, Your Shape: Fitness Evolved” and “Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2012,” available exclusively on Kinect™ for Xbox 360. This partnership marks the first time a fitness video game has been integrated with a health care solution in this way.

With new Android tablets on display everywhere at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2012) in Las Vegas, there’s good news for retailers this year. Ecommerce software developer Ability Commerce has reported that its full-service clients saw an explosion in holiday revenue stemming from Android devices, as consumers bought everything from videogames to electronics in record numbers using mobile devices instead of the traditional PC. Mobile shopping overall was a huge success as retailers experienced increased visits, transactions and revenue across all of the major operating systems. The Galaxy Note tablet is shown in the video below from CES 2012, and is sure to introduce even more consonumers to mobile shopping, as well as gaming.

LAS VEGAS – Last year, NVIDIA made a big splash at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) with its Tegra 2 technology. This year, the chip maker has Tegra 3 chips in hot new tablet devices, including the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime – one of a growing number of convertible devices that were shown through CES 2012. LAS VEGAS – The world has converged in Las Vegas for what’s expected to be a record crowd of media, analysts and tech companies for CES 2012. And for good reason. According to the latest forecast figures from GfK Digital World, produced in partnership with Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), global spending on consumer technology devices will surpass $1 trillion in 2012 for the first time, increasing by 5% over 2011’s figure of $993 billion.

Sony Computer Entertainment America has big plans for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2012. The game maker will kick things off with its annual Sony Electronics press conference, where its new PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) handheld entertainment system will be part of the press conference and have a good presence at its booth during the Las Vegas show. The CES show, which is held every year in Las Vegas, is primarily held to show off the latest in gadgets and electronics, and not really considered much of a "game show", unlike the Game Developers Conference and E3.  However, some game companies still take part, just to show off how far game development has come.  And this year, Nintendo will be making a trip to the event, bringing its upcoming Wii U system with it.

With CES 2012 just around the corner, the news isn’t good for big electronics giants like Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba and Sharp. A sharp slowdown in spending due to continuing economic chaos will cause revenue growth in the global consumer electronics (CE) market to fall short of growth expectations by more than 75 percent this year, according to an IHS iSuppli Consumer Platforms Market Tracker report. CE revenue in 2011 will amount to $357.3 billion, up a scant 1.5 percent from $351.9 billion in 2010, and equivalent to a 77 percent reduction compared to the previous IHS forecast of 6.4 percent growth for the year.

The newest models of leading video game consoles use 50% less energy today than their 2006 predecessors, saving consumers money in the form of lower electricity bills, according to new analysis by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). While both the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 each consumed roughly 180 Watts of power during game play when first introduced in the market, the latest releases of both systems now use around 90 Watts, demonstrating energy efficient technologies can be quickly implemented in the electronics industry.
