After making a huge splash on consoles last year (and we mean in bright red bloody colors), Mortal Kombat is just about ready to make its portable debut on the PlayStation Vita.  The game includes all the content from the original console game, along with online play, a number of exclusive Klassik Skins and a Challenge Tower that includes various touch screen games, including Test Your Slice (a Fruit Ninja variation) and Test Your Balance.

Once upon a time, the folks at United Front Games -- the developer behind ModNation Racers -- was assigned the task of bringing back Activision's True Crime series with an all new chapter.  But somewhere in the midst of the game's development, the publisher changed its mind, leaving years worth of work simply sitting on the table.  But not one to let, ahem, Sleeping Dogs lie, Square Enix picked up the project, changing its name but not its focus, and allowing United Front to finish up the project for action gamers to enjoy.  This August, the final product will arrive for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The fighting game market is still thriving quite well these days, with thousands of players stepping up for tournaments and proving their worth in games like Mortal Kombat, King of Fighters XIII and Street Fighter x Tekken, among others.  But by no means should you ignore the “little guys”, the teams that are still making less-than-popular fighting games that are just as good as the “big boys”.  Case in point – Skullgirls, the latest from Revenge Labs and their respective publishers at Autumn Games and Konami, has finally arrived on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network after what seems like years in development.  And now that it’s here, you shouldn’t dare miss it.

Hot on the heels of Namco Bandai’s Soul Calibur V World Championship in Las Vegas this week, there are new opportunities for the best fighting gamers to earn cash. Major League Gaming (MLG) is offering several fighting competitions to its 2012 Pro Circuit Spring Season. Check out this video from the Namco Soul Calibur V event below.

One of the features that Sony is vehemently trying to take advantage of with the PlayStation Vita is its augmented reality.  This is where you can take a real location and implement some sort of gaming into it, and while others may not get why you’re so excited, the experience in itself is an interesting one.  Sony’s already offering a number of free games that take advantage of this feature, as well as offering the full retail release of Reality Fighters, a brawling game where you can not only take locations and have a fight anywhere, but also create your own.  It’s a great idea, though one that’s sorely lacking in execution.

I always wondered what Spike TV was going to do now that it’s lost its UFC programming to FX Networks.  But now, thanks to my stop at 345 Games’ office during Game Developers Conference, I have a better idea.  The company is actually teaming with Bellator, an MMA fighting group, for new programming in 2013, and to sort of tie in with that, the publishers of the Deadliest Warrior games are working on a new MMA fighter for download on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.

The story behind Activision’s attempt to revive its True Crime series is an interesting one and, at one point, a sad one.  The company hired United Front Games to work on True Crime: Hong Kong, and even announced it during the 2010 Spike TV Video Game Awards show.  However, months after its development (and a pretty good E3 showcase), the company chose to cancel the project, feeling it wouldn’t live up to its potential.  Now that COULD’VE been a sad story, had Square Enix not picked up the pieces and opted to release the game as an original adventure called Sleeping Dogs.  But it did.

Say what you will about Capcom’s practice of releasing a fighting game, and then releasing an improved version of that game months later, but it’s quite effective, giving them time to add characters that make a difference to fighting fans, or adding the key features that will bring in an even bigger audience.  Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 easily fits into this business pathos, and after creating havoc on consoles a few months back, it’s making its handheld debut on the PlayStation Vita, along with a couple of extra features.  So, is it still good?

When it released for consoles late last year, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 marked some notable improvements over the original, including better fighting balance, extra modes (Galactus!) and the inclusion of some great new characters, such as Phoenix Wright (doesn't even fight, just shuffles papers and unleashes the ULTIMATE SECRETARY) and Ghost Rider.  Those who may have missed out on it, though, will have another chance to check it out, this time on the portable front, as UMVC 3 is set to arrive this month for PlayStation Vita.

When SoulCalibur IV came out a few years ago for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, some players were disappointed by the series' jump to next-gen, even with the addition of nifty Star Wars characters.  (C'mon, Darth Vader versus Mitsurugi was pretty damn epic.)  But luckily, Namco realizes that some better balancing was needed, and SoulCalibur V brings it in spades, between some great new characters and the kind of multiplayer that will keep you addicted for some time.  It's just a shame that the single player content couldn't really keep up...

We're only a couple of months away from the release of Capcom's latest crossover fighting game, one that combines two iconic franchises for the first time since the company teamed up with SNK many years ago.  This time around, the team's working closely with those over at Namco to mesh the worlds of Street Fighter and Tekken together.  The game's bound to be a hit on consoles, but one version you might not expect to be such a hot commodity is the one coming for the PlayStation Vita handheld.  We're here to tell you why it shouldn't be missed.

Believe it or not, play-by-play commentary can have some vital importance in a sports game.  Have it running too long and it becomes irrelevant to what's happening in the game.  Make it too silly and it can take away from the seriousness of your contest.  Make it disjointed and it sounds like a hideous mess.  There's a proper tone you have to nail when it comes to doing running commentary, but THQ recognizes this, as the development team has worked very closely to making UFC Undisputed 3's commentary better than ever.

There's no question that 2011 was a big year for the Mortal Kombat franchise, as Netherrealm Games effectively relaunched the franchise and made fighting relevant again, complete with over-the-top fatalities and bonus characters that piqued our interest.  (Freddy Krueger?)  But it looks like 2012 will be just as eventful for the series, as the team has not only announced a new Komplete Edition that's coming to consoles later this spring, but also its debut on the PlayStation Vita.

Mad Catz Inc. was front and center over the week at the Consumer Electronics Show, showcasing not only some great new headsets, but also its highly anticipated MLG Pro controller, which is now available, along with a line-up of new Street Fighter x Tekken controllers that are coming out alongside the upcoming fighting game this March.  And the fans who invest in the special edition FightStick are in for a treat...

Every year, Microsoft has a gaggle of Xbox Live Arcade titles held aside as part of a Block Party promotion, to entice subscribers to take part in some of the better downloadable titles out there.  It's been doing this for the past few years, and this morning, it continued to buck the trend with the announcement of XBLA House Party 2012, which includes what could very well be the best titles in the promotion to date -- including the long-awaited I Am Alive from Ubisoft.

Remember back in the 80's and 90's, when game makers were trying to throw in images of hot women to entice you to buy their product, rather than relying on the strength of the games themselves?  The classic Sega Saturn "naked lady" ad comes to mind, with her most oglesome parts covered by screenshots from Sega games.  Well, Namco seems to remember those days well, as its latest ad for Soul Calibur V seems to point out something a little too obvious -- there are boobs in the game.

When it was first announced back at E3, the UFC on Xbox Live app definitely had a few fans excited, especially with the promise of being able to watch live pay-per-views through the convenience on your console.  Unfortunately, last night proved that sometimes if something seems too good to be true, it usually is.

Soul Calibur has been a long standing series for not only some high-quality weapons combat, but also special guest appearances that have shaken up the fighting industry.  Over the years, we've seen everyone from Link from The Legend of Zelda to Spawn to Star Wars characters like Yoda and Darth Vader.  Today, Namco Bandai continued the tradition by revealing a character that will be in the upcoming Soul Calibur V -- Ezio Auditore da Firenze from Assassin's Creed.

When UFC Undisputed 2010 came out a year and a half ago, many people were wondering why Brock Lesnar was chosen to be on the cover...and well, the answer was kind of obvious.  Despite controversy surrounding him, the guy knew how to put up a fight.  Now THQ and UFC has chosen another great cover star for its upcoming UFC Undisputed 3, and it's none other than one of the hardest hitting stars in the circuit today, Anderson Silva.

A lot of sports programs are slowly seeping their way into our favorite game consoles.  Microsoft has ESPN integration nailed down to a science, even though crucial football and basketball programming is missing; Sony has NFL Sunday Ticket, courtesy of DirecTV, as well as the more affordable NHL GameCenter, which lets viewers check out their favorite hockey teams; and now UFC is getting into the action, ready to debut its Xbox Live channel starting December 1.  We managed to get a quick peek as to what it’s all about.

The original Mortal Kombat movie wasn't half bad.  Director Paul Anderson convincingly carried the tone from the video game over into an effective PG-13 rated product, and despite a few cheesy moments ("GORO!  YEAHHHH!"), it turned out to be one of the better video game movies to date.  But then New Line Cinema had to piss all over it by releasing Mortal Kombat Annihilation, a jumbled sequel with too many characters, a lame story, and the kind of special effects you'd see from a student production facility.  But luckily, it looks like the next Mortal Kombat film will be up to form...if it's ever released, anyway.

2012 is shaping up to be a big year for the folks at Tecmo Koei.  Along with the return of Ryu Hayabusa in Ninja Gaiden III, the company has announced another franchise that will receive a sequel next year -- the ongoing fighting series Dead Or Alive.  The fifth chapter in this series, aptly named Dead Or Alive 5, will bring plenty of 3-D brawling chaos -- and, of course, plenty of jiggling boobs.

For fighting fans, a FightStick is usually standard stuff.  You see pros nowadays carrying big bulky FightSticks under their arms to tournaments, taking out the trash in Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat with their own weapon of choice.  But Hit Box has begun working on a new FightStick model that could change the way these folks play fighting games, for the better.  The first step?  Getting rid of the stick entirely.
