When it comes to the global sport, soccer still reigns supreme. EA has sold over 100 million copies of its FIFA games over the years. With E3 around the corner, Electronic Arts unveiled five new innovations that will bring big changes to EA SPORTS FIFA Soccer 13, along with the largest and deepest feature set in the history of the franchise.

You may have heard about Microsoft upcoming first person shooter called Halo 4, which is releasing this Fall. We are only three weeks away from E3 and new details have started to emerge. Some are predictable, but the latest multiplayer details will catch your eye.

Epic Games, developer of the blockbuster Gears of War franchise and the groundbreaking Infinity Blade series, has added 3D technology company RealD into its Integrated Partners Program(IPP). Epic’s partner program brings industry-leading middleware technologies to the company’s award-winning Unreal Engine 3 (UE3), which powers many bestselling console, PC and mobile games.

When WarHawk released for PlayStation Network a few years back, it introduced some important new fundamentals to the multiplayer battle experience, letting teams take out one another either on the ground or in the air, using a number of well-armed vehicles.  While it was fun for networked battles, it really didn’t offer much outside of that, since there was no sign of a single player campaign.  That said, some team members behind that game have since shacked up with Lightbox Interactive to produce a sequel of sorts, and StarHawk is the result.  And as fun as the original Hawk was, this experience surpasses it.

LeBron James of the Miami Heat is the winner of the Maurice Podoloff Trophy as the 2011-12 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player Award, the NBA announced today. James earns the honor for the third time in four seasons and becomes the first player since Michael Jordan to win at least three MVPs. James, a gamer at heart, also has skills off the hardwoods. He talks about video games in the exclusive video interview below.

Electronic Arts never fails to showcase a strong array of third-party titles for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as well as other consoles each year they attend E3.  Last year was a huge highlight between such games as SSX and Mass Effect 3, but what does the company have to lean on this year?  Well, besides big sports hits like Madden NFL 13 and the upcoming Overstrike from Insomniac Games, we’ve got a few ideas as to what the company should officially announce at the show.  With that, here are our suggestions…

When StarDrone came out for the PlayStation Network a few months back, it introduced an interesting concept that could be used with the PlayStation Move controller, one that had you directing a star-shaped drone across universal maps, collecting stars and other content while getting from point A to point B while you directed it on its journey.  Though hardly as addictive as other PSN games, it had enough moments to give the game a look.  With that, Beatshapers has brought the same experience to the PS Vita, but with touch-screen controls and a few exclusive levels for good measure.  The only question now is whether it’s enough to warrant another purchase.  Sorry, but not this time around.

Ronimo Games dodged quite a bullet with the release of Awesomenauts, as the game’s publisher, DTG, was just about ready to file for bankruptcy, throwing its release into question.  But things got worked out, and now players everywhere will be able to experience the MOBA – multiplayer online battle arena – action that awaits within.  While there are things that are hard to overlook, the situations you can get into with friends really put the “Awesome” into the game’s name.

Recently, I was lucky to partake in the very first Guild Wars 2 beta and what a thrill it was. I haven’t played the franchise before, but all I have heard were great things and it’s one of the most risking IP’s on the market. Unlike most MMO’s, Guild Wars isn’t a subscription service and depends solely on in game player purchase. Besides the subscription model, the development team at NCSOFT is making a number of key changes to the MMO format that makes it immediately intriguing.

We’re all for trying something new in a long-running series, but the problem is when an idea is introduced that doesn’t pan out like the development team expected it to.  Sadly, this is looking like the case for Lionhead Studios’ Fable.  After three entertaining adventure outings, the series is drastically moving into Kinect territory later this year with Fable: The Journey, which, honestly, doesn’t look so hot right now.  To make matters worse, things don’t really fare much better with Lionhead’s recent XBLA release, Fable Heroes.

Billy and Jimmy Lee's impact on video games has been quite impressive over the years, starting with the duo's debut in Double Dragon in arcades well over 20 years ago.  Since that time, they've starred in countless iterations for the game, including a popular NES game and, as of late, an XBLA port of the original coin-op (though it's no longer available due to rights issues).  This summer, they're on the way back to the gaming scene for yet another comeback with Double Dragon Neon, Majesco's upcoming beat-em-up for Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.  We recently caught up with Pete Rosky to chat about what to expect from this revival.

God of War: Ascension was confirmed a few days ago by Sony after months of (badly) being kept secret by the company, and while many are interested in seeing the origins of the series’ violent hero, Kratos, there’s a new element that’s even more interesting.  Sony recently invited us down to an event in Los Angeles to get a first look at the game, but instead of seeing any aspect of single player, we were treated to a glimpse at the proposed multiplayer mode.

With Nintendo announcing that development has just begun on the next iteration of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting the game this year, as the team makes time to really have everything balanced.  So what’s a hardcore player to do while they wait for that brawlathon?  Well, how about engage in another?  Today, Sony announced that it is bringing its much-rumored PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale out for the holiday season, with a slew of fighters from the 15-plus year Sony gaming legacy and a smorgasbord of levels.  The company recently invited us to an event to go hands-on.

Throughout the history of video games, the oldest stereotype surrounding the industry has always been do violent video games affect player behavior and personality. It is a known fact that people who play games are exposed to more violence than the average consumer. From nuking entire civilization to obliterating players online, it’s has become more and more common now that games are more focus on squarely providing violent action. For this reason alone, parents have long held an underlining negative attitude towards the industry and those who stand by it, but is this criticism injustice or have developers gone to far? Should government step in?

When Trials HD came out a few years ago for Xbox Live Arcade, little did we know how much of a racing/strategic gem that RedLynx would end up creating.  The game has sold over two million units, with players logging in best racing times like crazy and yearning for more of the same.  Well, after a long, tedious wait, we finally have Ubisoft’s Trials Evolution, a game that follows a similar formula to the first game, but exceeds it in every category.  This, folks, is how you get a sequel made right.

I’m not sure what keeps compelling development teams to keep trying to make World War II-oriented flying games.  Maybe they’re trying to get a leg up on the Ace Combat series; or maybe they’re just trying to create the next “great thing” in the genre, like Secrets Weapons Over Normandy and the Blazing Angels series managed to do over the years.  Regardless, Konami’s stepping up this time around with Birds of Steel, and it actually feels like the most authentic entry in the genre to date.  But be warned, that doesn’t necessarily make the experience one that everyone can get into.

The fighting game market is still thriving quite well these days, with thousands of players stepping up for tournaments and proving their worth in games like Mortal Kombat, King of Fighters XIII and Street Fighter x Tekken, among others.  But by no means should you ignore the “little guys”, the teams that are still making less-than-popular fighting games that are just as good as the “big boys”.  Case in point – Skullgirls, the latest from Revenge Labs and their respective publishers at Autumn Games and Konami, has finally arrived on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network after what seems like years in development.  And now that it’s here, you shouldn’t dare miss it.

Yesterday, within 64 seconds of the first redemption going through, all 100 of the Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 graphics cards available in the PLEX for Graphics Cards program were sold out. The PLEX for Graphics Cards program allowed players to exchange 20 PLEX units for an EVGA GeForce GTX 560 video card, and have it shipped to their home. As first described at EVE Fanfest 2012, the joint program with Nvidia and CCP shattered all expectations in terms of player demand.

When you create a game for a motion-sensitive device, you have to keep things not only interesting, but fresh.  Stick with the same ideal too long and mundane feelings set in, leaving the player wondering why they’re still playing an hour into the game.  Some games have avoided these pratfalls, including Child of Eden and, most recently, Star Wars Kinect.  However, Diabolical Pitch, sadly, doesn’t avoid this rut.

“The Art of Video Games” is one of the first major exhibitions to explore the 40-year evolution of video games as an artistic medium, with a focus on striking graphics, creative storytelling and player interactivity. The exhibition features some of the most influential artists and designers across five eras of game development, from early pioneers to contemporary designers. Video games use player participation to tell stories and engage audiences. In the same way as film, animation and performance, video games are a compelling and influential form of narrative art.

The 2011-12 National Hockey League regular season was a six-month thrill ride that crowned four new division champions and qualified four teams for the playoffs who had missed the postseason last spring. For those teams who didn’t make the cut for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, there’s always next season – or a virtual payback in EA Sports’ NHL 12 game.

Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin captured his second career Art Ross Trophy as the National Hockey League’s scoring champion, Tampa Bay Lightning center and NHL 12 cover athlete Steven Stamkos claimed his second Maurice Richard Trophy as the League’s goal-scoring leader, and St. Louis Blues goaltenders Brian Elliott and Jaroslav Halak combined to win their first William Jennings Trophy as the goaltenders on the club allowing the fewest goals during the 2011-12 regular season. The four trophy winners will be honored at the 2012 NHL Awards, which will be held Wednesday, June 20 at the Wynn Las Vegas.

Inspired by scenes and locations from the Disney Animal Kingdom theme park, Disney Animal Kingdom Explorers was created by Playdom in partnership with the park’s scientists to ensure environmentally correct game play. Players will have the opportunity to become part of the Global Wildlife Research team, learn about rare and endangered species and build their own virtual preserves to house and protect hundreds of animals and plants from around the globe.  Players are even encouraged to be conscious of the needs of animals and their habitats - placing animals who cohabitate well next to each other will earn the player extra points.
