For the longest time, Square Enix’s role-playing games have followed a usual tradition, a pre-set game pattern involving an intricate battle system or characters that could easily be adapted to, depending on their techniques and weaponry.  While fans can certainly appreciate such an approach, others can be turned off by it, merely due to the monotony.  But the company is listening, and ready to provide something a little different this summer with Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy.

When Okami came out a few years ago from Capcom, it introduced an awe-inspiring hand-drawn world, provided by Clover Studios, that few games can match today.  It’s still highly regarded as a classic, and for good reason.  That said, Acquire, the same studio behind the old Tenchu games, has teamed up with XSEED Games to give their own artistic touch a try with Sumioni: Demon Arts, a game that combines beautiful traditional art with platforming gameplay.  It sounds like a dreamy combination, but the lack of replay value sets in way too quickly.

People could argue for hours on end about which Metal Gear Solid game was the best.  Some would say that the original PS One release can’t be beat; others feel that Peace Walker was a significant move forward for the series; and some will even swear up and down about Sons of Liberty rocking hard, even with the odd inclusion of a nude Raiden.  However, most of the consensus believes that Snake Eater, the third chapter in the series, is truly significant, if only because it takes place in a different time, telling the story from a new point of view.  And if you somehow missed this story, you have another chance to catch it, this time on the Nintendo 3DS with Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater.

Though it would’ve been nice to see a new Guilty Gear game by now, I’m rather overcome by the amount of effort Arc System Works has put into its latest fighting series, BlazBlue.  Sure, there have only been two really complete games to the series, but both of them come with the kind of presentation that resembles an anime being brought to life in a video game, and controls that a true fighting fanatic can certainly appreciate.  To help build the series even further, Arc, along with Aksys Games, has opted to release a portable version of its fighting phenomenon with BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend.

Following his unexpected death, Ubisoft has been looking to tribute Michael Jackson with its line-up of dance games.  And while they’ve been popular in certain circles, not everyone could get into Michael Jackson: The Experience, despite the cavalcade of songs from the King of Pop’s collection.  Maybe it was just trying to even come close to mimicking the guy that was the challenge.  The PlayStation Vita version, launching with the system this week, takes a different approach, but its limitations end up working against it.

I love how the App Store is picking up in quality games.  Unfortunately, with that comes an escalated price.  Take SoulCalibur, for instance.  A decent port, sure, but it’s missing a lot of the stuff that made the Dreamcast original so grand, and it’s going for…$17?  C’mon, the Xbox Live Arcade version is only $10.  That said, there are some games that do validate their worth.  And one of them, believe it or not, is Taito’s Dariusburst SP.

Video pinball has gone through resurgence over the years.  No longer is about putting together some cruddy overhead table with questionable ball physics and more focus on the gimmick than the actual play.  (We’re looking at you, Crue Ball.)  It’s starting to get more like the classic style of play, where you actually stood over a machine and flipped to your heart’s content.  No one knows this better than Farsight Studios, as you’ll plainly see from its recently released The Pinball Arcade.

When I played Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D for Nintendo 3DS last year, I saw some great potential out of the game, save problems and all.  But it still felt a little short-handed to me, as if Capcom was holding back for something better – in this case, Resident Evil Revelations.  And this problem has happened more than once, and is likely to happen again when next month’s Operation Raccoon City is dwarfed by Resident Evil 6 later this year.  But that’s later on.  For now, I humbly suggest you enjoy Revelations, because it’s the Resident Evil experience that the 3DS needs.

There's no question that 2011 was a big year for the Mortal Kombat franchise, as Netherrealm Games effectively relaunched the franchise and made fighting relevant again, complete with over-the-top fatalities and bonus characters that piqued our interest.  (Freddy Krueger?)  But it looks like 2012 will be just as eventful for the series, as the team has not only announced a new Komplete Edition that's coming to consoles later this spring, but also its debut on the PlayStation Vita.

Nathan Drake just had his biggest adventure yet with Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Now the action hero is going on his smallest quest to date – at least in screen size. Sony is launching PlayStation Vita with Uncharted: Golden Abyss, a brand new game in the franchise. And yes, Nolan North is back to voice Drake in the portable PS Vita launch title. Check out the game in action from CES 2012 in the exclusive video below.

When developers put some effort into making an iPad game, some try to pull out all the stops and replicate the same kind of experience you’d get from a game console.  The Apple tablet is a respectable game machine, after all, especially if you’re playing something along the lines of Dead Space or the awesome Infinity Blade.  But sometimes you can try to pile on too much, and as a result, it mars the experience.  That’s exactly what happens with 2K Sports’ NBA 2K12.  The company shoots for a quality simulation, right up there with the console versions, but it comes up short in key areas.  It’s like the thrill of seeing someone go for a fast break and then miff the dunk at the end.

After a slow start with a high price tag, Nintendo seems to have righted its portable ship with the price cut of Nintendo 3DS. In its eighth month on the market, the Nintendo 3DS system crossed 1.65 million units sold in the U.S., according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. This milestone puts the platform on track to surpass the first-year total of Nintendo DS, the best-selling game platform in U.S. history.

Nintendo 3DS owners across North America can now download a free application that allows Netflix members with unlimited streaming plans to instantly watch TV episodes and movies streaming from Netflix. Whenever a new system is announced, the rumor mill kicks in full gear. Legitimate information is lost amongst the sea of speculation, and it becomes impossible to tell fact from fiction. As we approach E3, now just a few days away, it's finally time for the truth to be revealed, and Japanese website Nikkei has leaked details on the controller for Nintendo's next console.

Though you may have gotten used to calling Sony's new handheld the NGP, that may not be the case when it is officially unveiled at E3. Rumors have been floating around that the device will instead be named the Vita. Images have also popped up that appear to be a manual that does indeed say it's the PS Vita. But did Sony make the right move naming it the Vita, or was it better off being called the NGP?

Semiconductor facilities in Japan that had suspended manufacturing activities after the earthquake cannot truly commence full production again until the aftershocks cease. Earthquakes ranging from 4 to 7 on the Richter scale will make it impossible to fully restart these fabs until the earthquakes stop happening with such frequency, IHS iSuppli research indicates. Every time a quake tops 5, the equipment automatically shuts down. There are 130 production semiconductor fab lines located in 53 locations in Japan and this will effect all types of consumer electronics, mobile devices and portable gaming systems.

Sony Computer Entertainment debuted its next generation portable entertainment system (codename: NGP), at a press event in Japan. The latest iteration of the PSP (PlayStation Portable) device will ship this Fall and bring PlayStation 3-quality games to the portable games arena. Although NGP won’t support autostereoscopic 3D gameplay, Sony will be facing off against the Nintendo 3DS, which ships March 27 in the U.S. The NGP is expected to retail for $250, according to Michael Pachter, video game analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities.

Introduced earlier this year for desktop PCs, NVIDIA 3D Vision technology instantly became the preferred 3D solution for playing computer games, watching movies, or viewing photographs in full resolution stereoscopic 3D. NVIDIA today, along with the world’s leading PC manufacturers, notebook panel manufacturers, and content developers, is pleased to announce the expansion of the NVIDIA 3D Vision ecosystem to include high-definition notebook platforms that integrate advanced 120Hz 3D Vision-capable displays directly into the chassis for on-the-go 3D.
