Samsung Electronics in the fourth quarter of 2011 solidified its leadership of the U.S. liquid-crystal display (LCD) market, as its share of unit shipments reached a record high, according to the IHS iSuppli Television Systems Service at information and analytics provider IHS. During the final three months of 2011, Samsung accounted for nearly one-quarter of U.S. LCD TV shipments, at 23.6 percent. This represented the largest share of the market ever posted by Samsung on a quarterly basis, and allowed the South Korean electronics giant to pad its lead over No.2 brand VIZIO Inc. of Irvine, Calif.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has sold more than 1.2 million units of the action-fantasy film Immortals in its first week. Nearly half of those sales were for Blu-ray versions of the game and 10% were for the 3D Blu-ray combo pack. Apple has sold three million new iPads since launch on Friday, March 16 and that’s with many consumers still awaiting new product. Eager fans spent the night waiting in line for the new device and crowds stormed retail stores to be the first to buy the new tablet. Worldwide media tablet shipments into sales channels rose by 56.1% on a sequential basis in the fourth calendar quarter of 2011 (4Q11) to 28.2 million units worldwide, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker. That represents an increase of 155% from the fourth quarter of 2010. The market experienced stronger-than-expected growth across many regions and at many price points, leading to a full-year 2011 total of 68.7 million units. Based upon the markets' strong 2011 finish, and the clear demand expected in 2012, IDC has increased its 2012 forecast to 106.1 million units, up from its previous forecast of 87.7 million units.

SAN FRANCISCO – Nintendo had a strong showing at the Game Developers Conference (GDC 2012). The game maker abandoned Wii U for Nintendo 3DS and featured some brand new games. On display and playable was Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir, Mario Tennis and Kid Icarus: Uprising.

Electronic Arts has big expectations for BioWare’s Mass Effect 3. The game publisher has shipped over 3.5 million units of the award-winning game globally and already sold 890,000 copies in the first day at retail. The game has made headlines of late over a pair of controversies. Metacritic has been deleting an overwhelming number of negative user-generated reviews for the game. And the game developer also received some pushback over the game’s homosexual content with the introduction of same-sex male relationships. Previous games have allowed same-sex female relationships.

With the might of Sony’s marketing machine behind it, yesterday’s launch of Sony’s PlayStation Vita in North America and Europe underlines the company’s hopes that this next generation portable game console can turnaround the fortunes of its loss-making Consumer Products & Services segment. The good news keeps on coming for publisher ZeniMax Media. Worldwide revenues generated by The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim have placed it among the industry's most successful titles, and demand for the title shows no signs of slowing. Measured by revenue, Skyrim was the second best selling game of 2011, and 2012 sales remain strong, with continuing digital downloads and large shipments of units to retail. Within the first month following its release in November, Bethesda Softworks® reported it had shipped over 10 million units of Skyrim across all platforms, representing approximately $650 million in retail sales, and those results have since increased substantially.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 sold an estimated 3.2 million DVD and Blu-ray units during its first weekend of release. Ubisoft’s Just Dance 3 sold through more than 7 million units since its release, bringing total sell-through of the Just Dance franchise to more than 25 million units worldwide. Launched in October, Just Dance 3 has consistently been in the top five video game sales charts in both the U.S. (NPD) and Europe (GfK Chart Track).  Just Dance 3 was the best-selling U.S. game on the Kinect for Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and PlayStation Move for PlayStation 3 for December 2011.

LAS VEGAS -- Intel used the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2012) to demonstrate a prototype ultrabook dubbed Nikiski that features a transparent touch pad panel allowing tablet-style operation. The advent of the Nikiski represents the first wave of what promises to be a deluge of tablet-style ultrabooks designed to stave off the inroads of Apple’s iPad and other competing devices.

LAS VEGAS – Microsoft executive Steve Ballmer did talk about games during his final keynote of the Consumer Electronics Show. The Xbox 360 has sold over 66 million pieces of hardware since it first launched in 2006, including 10 million in Q4 2011. Microsoft’s motion-sensor Kinect device has continued to sell well with an installed base of 18 million gamers. And Microsoft now has a robust community of over 40 million Xbox Live users.

Driven by fast-selling software Nintendo 3DS sells more in its first nine months than Wii did, capping a very good 2011 for the game maker. Whether they were on the go or at home, whether they played in 2D on the TV or in glasses-free 3D in their hands, gamers of all ages celebrated the holidays with Mario and Zelda. Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 for Nintendo 3DS not only became the fastest-selling titles in the history of their respective franchises when they launched, but they are now also the first Nintendo 3DS titles to sell 1 million units each in the United States. On the console side, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which also broke launch records, became the 45 Wii title to sell more than 1 million units in the U.S.

As a dark harbinger of things to potentially come in other markets, Sony has not been able to attract Japanese gamers with its new PlayStation (PS) Vita portable gaming device. During it’s first week at retail in Japan, the game system sold 320,000 units (although that only covered two days). But in its second week (and first full week) on store shelves, Sony enticed a meager 72,000 gamers to buy its pricey new hardware. Even the old PSP outsold the new PS Vita by 40% over Christmas.

Although many people have upgraded to Blu-ray Discs, the majority of Americans still view movies on DVD. While the overall home entertainment market is still hurting as more people rent than buy movies, blockbuster event movies still entice purchases. Warner Home Video had a very good year with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I and II dominating the chart. Electronic Arts-owned BioWare’s first MMO game, Star Wars: The Old Republic just before Christmas, and already fan engagement is setting new standards for an MMO game launch. The game is the fastest-growing subscription MMO in history, with more than one million registered players since launching on December 20, 2011. BioWare and EA are limiting sales of the reported $100 million game into 2012 in an attempt to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all while further growing the community.

While James Cameron doesn’t have anything to worry about when it comes to the final tally of his Avatar 3D epic, Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 did the director’s film in the race to $1 billion. MW3 earned $1 billion in just 16 days. It took Avatar 17 days to reach that milestone. It’s worth noting that Activision chose not to release the new game in 3D after experimenting with 3D in Black Ops last year across all platforms.

Gamers were waiting a long time for the new Elder Scrolls adventure, and they’ve come out in droves around the globe to make the role-playing game a blockbuster success. Bethesda Softworks has sold over 5.17 million copies of Skyrim since launch around the world, according to VGChartz. Bethesda shipped 7 million copies of the title at launch and sold over 3.4 million copies in its first 48 hours at retail. Gamers are still picking up new copies of the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 RPG, which is also expected to be a big Christmas gift this holiday.

Entering the seventh year of its lifecycle, Xbox 360 just closed the biggest sales week in the history of Xbox, selling more than 960,000 consoles in the U.S. during the week of Black Friday. The game maker also has seen continued interest in its controller-free games. More than 750,000 Kinect for Xbox 360 sensors were sold in the U.S. that week, both standalone and bundled, according to internal Microsoft data.

With CES 2012 just around the corner, the news isn’t good for big electronics giants like Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba and Sharp. A sharp slowdown in spending due to continuing economic chaos will cause revenue growth in the global consumer electronics (CE) market to fall short of growth expectations by more than 75 percent this year, according to an IHS iSuppli Consumer Platforms Market Tracker report. CE revenue in 2011 will amount to $357.3 billion, up a scant 1.5 percent from $351.9 billion in 2010, and equivalent to a 77 percent reduction compared to the previous IHS forecast of 6.4 percent growth for the year.
