Inspired by scenes and locations from the Disney Animal Kingdom theme park, Disney Animal Kingdom Explorers was created by Playdom in partnership with the park’s scientists to ensure environmentally correct game play. Players will have the opportunity to become part of the Global Wildlife Research team, learn about rare and endangered species and build their own virtual preserves to house and protect hundreds of animals and plants from around the globe.  Players are even encouraged to be conscious of the needs of animals and their habitats - placing animals who cohabitate well next to each other will earn the player extra points.

Funtactix, a worldwide developer and publisher of social games based on movies, has been working closely with Lionsgate to deliver The Hunger Games Adventures to fans of the blockbuster film franchise. The game developer worked closely with author Suzanne Collins on the new casual game, which features the same game engine technology as Mission: Impossible The Game and Rango: The WORLD. With the first movie continuing to break box office records with $61.1 million in its second weekend and $364.9 million overall, this new game will serve to bridge the gap between movies. Three more films are planned.

With the heat building for the official kickoff of the summer movie season – Marvel’s The Avengers – gamers won’t have a console game to play. But Marvel Entertainment and Disney Interactive Media Group (DIMG) have debuted a social game based on Marvel’s iconic characters, Marvel: Avengers Alliance. Developed by Playdom, Marvel: Avengers Alliance features a tactical turn-based combat experience with dozens of familiar Marvel Super Heroes and Super Villains. Though it's not based on the franchise movie, it is better than nothing.

EA Sports is connecting with gamers in a new way with its FIFA Street arcade soccer game. The Street Network will encourage social competition among players when the game launches at retail worldwide on March 13, 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Through the Street Network, players will be able to capture video of their best tricks and share them in-game with friends, showing off their personal favorites and embarrassing their opponents.  In addition, friends will be able to track and compare each other’s progress throughout the game, including World Tour story mode and Head-to-Head Online Seasons, and follow each other’s status in EA Sports Football Club.

Zynga, fresh off its IPO, is expanding into new territory on Facebook. The casual game maker has launched Hidden Chronicles, the company’s first-ever social hidden object game. Created by some of the most talented women in casual and social game design and entertainment, Hidden Chronicles invites players to find hidden objects, solve puzzles, and unlock mysteries. Marking an entrance into an entirely new game genre for Zynga, Hidden Chronicles combines memory, skill, and social interactions, making it the most social hidden object game available.

Some might say that the arcade is dead...and some of you would definitely be right.  When the home video game business boomed in the 90's, it pretty much spelled doom for the old mom and pop arcades that flourished in the 80's, as well as the arcade game business in general.  But some folks never gave up on the form, and today they have found a sudden resurgence in the nightlife market, living on as "barcades", drinking establishments mixed in with classic gaming.  And they've been quite successful.

In anticipation of its IPO, Zynga showcased new games at Zynga Unleashed, its first media event hosted by CEO and Founder Mark Pincus held at its new San Francisco headquarters. The company gave a sneak peek of several new social games, including the next chapter in its Ville franchise and teased its own new play service, code named Project Z. CastleVille is the newest game heading to Facebook. Cityville, the last title in the franchise, has over 74 million gamers. There’s also a new Zynga Casino that features Zynga Poker and the newly announced Zynga Bingo to create the world’s largest and most social casino. The company is also launching a new Hidden Objects genre with the social game, Hidden Chronicles.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has launched The Big Bang Theory: Mystic Warlords of Ka’a. The new free-to-play Facebook game is based on the fictional fantasy card game that characters the hit CBS TV show have played over the past four seasons. The fifth season of the Warner Bros. Television comedy kicked off on its new Thursday night and the series has also entered into syndication. Now, there’s also the first video game, which fits nicely within the gamer mentality of the show’s characters.

Zynga is pushing social games forward with its latest Facebook game, which draws inspiration from Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider. Set during the golden age of exploration, Adventure World unlocks a new universe of exploration and puzzle-solving fun, where players battle nasty critters and trace clues to discover the lost secrets of El Dorado. In Adventure World, players explore a vast universe of five worlds – Deep Jungle, Mountain, Cavern, Volcano and El Dorado – including more than 30dynamic environments. The first game to be developed by the company’s Zynga Boston studio, Adventure World is the most feature-rich game Zynga has ever released at launch.

Cologne -- Sony Computer Entertainment held its annual press conference to kick off Gamescom 2011 in Germany. The game publisher announced to a packed crowd that it will introduce dedicated applications for Facebook, foursquare, Skype and Twitter to PlayStation Vita (PS Vita). The portable which will launch in Japan by the end of 2011, followed by the U.S. and Europe early next year. One of the big games for the device is Little Deviants, which you can see in action in the video below.

Mobile game publisher Beeline Interactive, a division of Capcom, has licensed the Peanuts to develop a new freemium game for smartphones based on Charles Schulz’s beloved characters. Showtime is gearing up for the sixth season of its hit show, “Dexter,” starring Michael C. Hall. And for the second consecutive Comic-Con, “Dexter” is getting a new video game. This year, the world’s favorite serial killer is going social. Marc Ecko Entertainment has created Dexter Slice of Life, a brand new Facebook game that will launch in tandem with the first episode of Season 6 this September. Showtime is debuting the new video game at a Comic-Con 2011 party at Wired Cafe on July 21. “Dexter” star David Zayas, who plays Angel, talks about video games in the exclusive video interview below.

Despite a recent string of down months in U.S. video game sales at retail this year, a new report from research firm Gartner paints a very rosy picture for the global video game industry. When adding in revenues from burgeoning online, mobile and digital gaming sectors, Gartner estimates that worldwide spending on the gaming ecosystem will exceed $74 billion in 2011, up 10.4 percent from the $67 billion spent last year. By 2015, spending is expected to reach $112 billion.

The independent game studio has launched the first phase of a new venture, Bungie Aerospace, created to help independent developers create brilliant mobile and social games. Bungie Aerospace will give studios the creative freedom and the resources they need, like access to the Bungie.net platform and an audience with the incredible Bungie community, to launch their entertainment experiences into orbit.

AT&T has signed a deal with social games developer Zynga, designed to bring the very latest in mobile social gaming to AT&T’s millions of wireless customers. Popular games such as Words with Friends and Zynga Poker, plus customized content, will be featured for download on AT&T’s shelf in Android Market later this year. The agreement is the first of its kind between Zynga and a U.S. wireless carrier.
