As a dark harbinger of things to potentially come in other markets, Sony has not been able to attract Japanese gamers with its new PlayStation (PS) Vita portable gaming device. During it’s first week at retail in Japan, the game system sold 320,000 units (although that only covered two days). But in its second week (and first full week) on store shelves, Sony enticed a meager 72,000 gamers to buy its pricey new hardware. Even the old PSP outsold the new PS Vita by 40% over Christmas.

Xbox 360 turned in the most successful October on record maintaining its lead in the current-generation console market. Kicking off the Christmas shopping season, Xbox 360 hardware and game sales dominated in October in the U.S., according to the NPD Group. Gearbox Software is developing a cel-shaded sequel to its Unreal Engine 3 hit, Borderlands. One of the big games of 2012, 2K Games will ship Borderlands 2 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Combining invention and evolution, the sequel features all new characters, skills, environments, enemies, weapons and equipment, which come together in an ambitiously crafted story. Players will reveal secrets, and escalate mysteries of the Borderlands universe as they adventure across the unexplored new areas of Pandora.

Award-winning soundtrack composer, producer and recording artist Rod Abernethy has crafted the original music score for id Software's post-apocalyptic world in RAGE, the latest game from the acclaimed designers of such classics as the Wolfenstein, DOOM, and QUAKE series. Abernethy brought an immersive hybrid approach to scoring the highly anticipated blockbuster, employing traditional acoustic instrumentation and mixing experimental electronic sounds. RAGE is scheduled to release for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 4th in North America and October 7th in Europe.

Seattle – Valve Software, which is based in Seattle, used the local video game convention, PAX Prime 2011, to debut its latest game. Counter Strike: Global Offensive was on display at Valve’s booth for gamers to get a first look at. Despite a recent string of down months in U.S. video game sales at retail this year, a new report from research firm Gartner paints a very rosy picture for the global video game industry. When adding in revenues from burgeoning online, mobile and digital gaming sectors, Gartner estimates that worldwide spending on the gaming ecosystem will exceed $74 billion in 2011, up 10.4 percent from the $67 billion spent last year. By 2015, spending is expected to reach $112 billion.

John Lasseter actually got the idea for the spy theme used extensively in the new Disney Interactive Studios and Avalanche Software Cars 2 video game back with the original film. He had to cut a scene at a drive-in featuring a car spy movie, but he kept that idea in the back of his head and incorporated it into the new movie. Then the game creatives took the concept of CHROME and designed an entire stand-alone video game around it.

Disney Interactive Studios is taking Cars 2 to the third dimension on PlayStation 3. After opting out of 3D for last year’s Toy Story 3 and TRON: Evolution games on the PS3 front, the game publisher is bringing PS3 gamers the same type of 3D experience that filmgoers will have access to on the big screen. Only the game will be a completely original experience from the John Lasseter-directed sequel. LOS ANGELES – According to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), 46,800 video game industry professionals, investor analysts, and retailers attended E3 2011. The leading global computer and video game trade show closed after more than 200 exhibitors unveiled the latest interactive entertainment hardware and software that will hit store shelves this holiday season. ESA also revealed that E3 2012 will occur June 5-7, 2012, in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Convention Center. E3 2011 contributed more than an estimated $25 million in revenue to the city of Los Angeles.

Child’s Play, the largest community-based charity in gaming, and the Entertainment Software Association Foundation today announced the first annual Child’s Play Invitational Golf Tournament at E3. The tournament will raise funds to supply over 60 hospitals worldwide with computer and video games. The event, which will shuttle participants from downtown LA to and from the Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena, CA, will take place on June 5, 2011. While Nintendo is charging more for Nintendo 3DS games and hardware, everything else is coming down in price. The Wii hardware price has been slashed to $170 and Internet reports suggest that Nintendo could cut another $20 off that price by June as it faces stronger competition from Sony and Microsoft at retail. The price cut is also a precursor to the rumoroed Wii HD console announcement that's expected at E3 in June. In addition, Nintendo has made two of its bestselling games $10 cheaper. Wii Sports Resort and Wii Party will retail for $40 each starting April 25.

Nintendo of America is teaming with visual arts educators across the United States to give students a fresh, fun way to study drawing and painting techniques. As part of a unique relationship between Nintendo and the National Art Education Association (NAEA), art teachers in elementary, middle and high school classrooms have been provided with hand-held Nintendo DSi XL systems and copies of Art Academy, a software title that offers interactive art tutorials for budding artists of any background or skill level. SAN FRANCISCO, California -- Valve, creator of best-selling game franchises Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, and Counter-Strike, is using GDC 2011 to demonstrate new Steam technology to game developers and publishers. The game technology company best known for the Source Engine introduced a new "big picture" mode of Steam which will offer controller support and navigation designed for television interaction. The computer and video game industry added nearly $5 billion to the U.S. economy in 2009, according to a new study released today by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). The study, Video Games in the 21st Century: The 2010 Report, also found that the entertainment software industry's real annual growth rate from 2005 to 2009 exceeded 10 percent, more than seven times the growth rate of the U.S. economy as a whole.

Despite massive sales from Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto IV, 2009 video game sales were down as a result of the recession. According to market research company, The NPD Group, U.S. retail sales of video games, which includes portable and console hardware, software and accessories, generated revenues of close to $19.66 billion, an 8 percent decline over the $21.4 billion generated in 2008.
