Like it or not, 3-D gaming is a trend that's pretty much here to stay, with several new titles supporting the format on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.  Epic Games is the latest company to jump on the bandwagon, as they have announced that they will be adding 3-D support to its upcoming Gears of War 3, releasing for Xbox 360 next month.  But it may not be the full 1080p 3-D gaming that you'd expect...

When Nintendo launches its first high definition video game console, Wii U, next year, game developers will be able to make stereoscopic 3D games for all three major consoles for the first time. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata confirmed that from a technology standpoint, gamers who connect Wii U to a 3D TV will be able to experience 3D gaming. However, Iwata said 3D gaming is not an area that Nintendo is focusing on in the console space.

With Sony’s PlayStation Network back up, the game company is turning its attention to its big E3 press conference. Sony has an excellent line-up of games, but one that stands out from the crowd in the 3D realm is Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. The game will be on display at Sony’s E3 booth and should be demonstrated at the press conference in 3D. Jesse Divnich, Vice President of Capital Research for Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR), believes this game could do for 3D gaming what Avatar did for 3D Hollywood movies.

LOS ANGELES – Insomniac Games offered hands-on gameplay with the stereoscopic 3D version of Resistance 3 at a press event on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. Canada is going 3D. And not just with stereoscopic 3D broadcasts of NHL Stanley Cup Playoff hockey. The building blocks for the next generation of stereoscopic 3D gaming are being put in place in Canada through a series of government funding. The Ministry of Tourism and Culture, the Ontario Media Development Corporation’s (OMDC) Entertainment, and Creative Cluster Partnerships Fund along with support from Ontario Centers of Excellence (OCE) are providing over a half million dollars (Canadian) to launch Interactive Gaming Ontario 3D (iGO3D).

Insomniac Games has enlisted Hollywood composer Michael Bross to craft the soundtrack to one of Sony’s big PlayStation 3 games of 2011-- Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One. Over four hours of original music will be featured in the stereoscopic 3D sequel, which introduces cooperative gameplay to the franchise. Bross, who has worked on films like The Black Dahlia and Ripper, was hired to bring a fresh perspective to the series while respecting the direction the franchise has taken with past titles.

SAN FRANCISCO, California --Dessault Systèmes used GDC 2011 to demonstrate that users of 3DVIA Scenes, a free online 3D publishing application, can share their creations in fully immersive stereoscopic 3D. With this update, over 230,000 3DVIA.com content creators can interact inside their applications online or through PC-connected TVs using anaglyph (red/blue), side-by-side, line-by-line or checkerboard-capable 3D glasses.

LOS ANGELES – Beating Nintendo and its upcoming Nintendo 3DS to the punch, Los Angeles-based Master Image, the second largest 3D digital cinema technology company, showed off its auto-stereoscopic 3D technology at the 3D Gaming Summit on a Hitachi Wooo mobile phone. The phone has been shipping in Japan and has already become the number one mobile phone there with a few hundred thousand devices sold since its introduction. Master Image’s auto-stereoscopic technology allows users to see 3D without the use of the typical 3D polarized or anaglyph red and blue glasses. The device will play movies and games in 3D.

Nintendo of Japan has surprised the videogame industry by announcing a brand new portable gaming device, the Nintendo 3DS (working title), which will allow gamers to play stereoscopic 3D games without wearing 3D glasses. The new gaming system will debut at the E3 show in Los Angeles June 15th and will ship in Japan during Nintendo’s next fiscal year, which ends March 2011.
