SAN FRANCISCO -- Richard Garriott is at GDC 2010 this week to talk about his new venture into social games. With the declaration of its formation as a company less than a month old, officials with Portalarium, Inc., announced today that its first game, Sweet @$! Poker, is now in commercial launch. The game is available on Facebook and during its short beta cycle of only five weeks has already zoomed to become the 12th most popular poker app on Facebook (out of 47 total) and the 32nd most popular Facebook card game overall (out of 200+ total).

SAN FRANCISCO -- Electronic Arts has signed an agreement with 38 Studios to publish the company’s first videogame, an epic single-player role-playing game codenamed Project Mercury. 38 Studios is the creative enterprise of World Series MVP and avid gamer Curt Schilling. Project Mercury is being developed at Big Huge Games, a wholly-owned subsidiary of 38 Studios, under the leadership of Ken Rolston, former lead designer of the critically acclaimed hits, Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. The game marks the first entry into the company’s vast universe created by New York Times best-selling fantasy author R. A. Salvatore, with artistic direction by Todd McFarlane, renowned artist and creator of Spawn.

Visionary director Tim Burton’s latest movie, Alice in Wonderland, made over $113 million in its opening weekend. The 3D film from Walt Disney Pictures, which had a reported budget of $200 million, stars long-time Burton collaborator Johnny Depp and takes a very different take on Through the Looking Glass than previous filmed or videogame versions. The director also worked with Disney Interactive Studios on the new Wii and Nintendo DS games based on the movie. Burton talked about his new movie and the role 3D will play in Hollywood moving forward.

LOS ANGELES, California – At the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, James Cameron’s ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow took the top two prizes for best picture and best director for “The Hurt Locker.” With nine nominations each, The Hurt Locker” ended the night with six Oscars to “Avatar’s” three. “Avatar” won for best cinematography, best visual effects and best art direction while “The Hurt Locker” won for best picture, best director, best original screenplay, best film editing, best sound editing and best sound mixing making a combined nine Oscars for the ex-power couple. “Precious” and “Up” each took home two Oscars apiece to tie for third most Oscars on the night.
