“Metroidvania” games are hard to come by these days. However, fans of this exploration based adventure genre do occasionally have something to celebrate. Shadow Complex found its way onto 2009’s Summer of Arcade line-up and stretched the boundaries of what people thought XBLA games could be. While Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet may not be as large in scope, it no doubt makes up for this with a fantastic visual style and a unique puzzle-based implementation of the Metroidvania formula.

Tokyo Game Show, which is best described as the Japanese equivalent of E3, is a big yearly event for video games, specifically of the Japanese variety. By extension, it's a big event for Square Enix. According to this week's Dengeki PlayStation, Testuya Nomura touched on what people could expect from the company at this year's TGS.

Comic-Con 2011 packed plenty of little surprises within its halls, including several new comic book enterprises, plenty of cool merchandise, and a few celeb signings we didn't see coming.  But we'll be honest -- nothing could've prepared us for Abobo's Big Adventure, an 8-bit game that will soon be released for Flash play (no charge) over at AbobosBigAdventure.com.

Bastion is, in a word, incredible. It takes the standard Action RPG formula and adds enough quirks and style to make it feel completely different. It shows the incredible potential of downloadable games as rich and rewarding game experiences in their own right.

One of the highlights for our trip to Comic-Con this year was attending the panel for Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, set for release on PlayStation 3 this November.  The panel included the likes of behind-the-scenes folks at Naughty Dog, including Amy Hennig herself, as well as voice talent such as Nolan North and Emily Rose.  It was a delightful sit-in, and not just because of a shirt giveaway.  But, hey you can see for yourself.

STARZ hit television show Spartacus returned to Comic Con for its third consecutive year to introduce their new season, Spartacus: Vengeance. After a hugely successful first season (Spartacus: Blood and Sand) and a brilliant half-season "prequel" series (Spartacus: Gods of the Arena), STARZ is coming back with a vengeance. "It's just a gigantic, gigantic season", said new Spartacus actor Liam McIntyre.

This was my first real Comic-Con event.  I know, it's been happening for years and has been nothing short of amazing with all the celebrities and parties happening, as well as all the fanfare for upcoming movies and video games.  But I'll tell you, despite my high levels of exhaustion and complete drought of cash (someone buy me some mac n' cheese), it was an utter blast and I absolutely can't wait for next year's event.  Here are some of the highlights from my trip...

Being labeled a film visionary cannot be an easy title to live up to, but directors Jon Favreau (Cowboys and Aliens, Iron Man) and Guillermo Del Toro (Pans Labyrinth, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark) are two who live up to the bar. The directors, who are also spectacular friends and fans of each other, shared a panel at Comic Con 2011. Each talked about their own works and what it takes to transform the big screen from an idea into reality.

When Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 first came out, there were some pretty questionable omissions in terms of characters on the roster. While Capcom did make room for plenty of newcomers such as Dante and Zero, characters such as Ken and Strider were certainly missed by fans of the series. Luckily for them, one of the series veterans will, in fact, be making his return as Strider Hiryu will be one of the 10 new characters in Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. If you aren't a believer just by reading it, check out this gameplay trailer released by Capcom.
